A relationship with the right car repair shop will protect you from being ripped off on auto repairs as well as being aware of these three scams:
The auto repair shop tries to sell you something you don’t need
This is the worst kind of rip-off and occurs regularly in certain shops.
How to Protect Yourself: Before agreeing to any repairs, be sure you understand what work is being done. A reputable shop will take the time to teach you everything you need to know to make an informed decision. Have the shop show you each needed item before and after repairs are done. If you are unsure about anything, remember: you can always take your car somewhere else for repairs. Always ask as many questions as you can so that you feel confident with your decision. Afterwards, verify that the repairs were done, and ask the shop to give you back your old parts.
The auto shop isn’t qualified to perform the repairs
A general shortage of technicians nationwide has led to many unskilled techs in the field. You are paying for their inexperience in wasted diagnosis time, mistakes, and unneeded parts.
How to Protect Yourself: Find a shop that is accredited by AAA, ASE, ASA, BBB, etc. Technicians can be specially certified for different car systems. Therefore, make sure your tech is ASE certified in the specialty he’s working in. Be aware, though, that being certified in one specialty doesn’t mean being certified in all areas.
The promoted repair price isn’t realistic
Many of us have seen commercials advertising cheap four-wheel brake jobs for $99…and are tricked by the ads into getting a $200-$300 service. Scheduled maintenance, tune-ups, and many other services can have a misleading price tag.
How to Protect Yourself: If it sounds too good to be true, assume it is! Have a reputable shop give you an accurate estimate, or get ready to open your wallet much wider than you expected!
