Spark plugs are a small part of a vehicle that most drivers don’t think about… until something goes wrong. The manufacturer’s maintenance schedule that comes with your vehicle includes regular spark plug replacement. What do spark plugs do for your car’s engine?
If it wasn’t for this little piece of equipment, a car wouldn’t be able to start at all!
The spark plug forces electricity to arc across a gap, just like a bolt of lightning. In order for an effective spark to be created, the electricity has to be at a high voltage. When a spark is created, the air/fuel mixture produced inside the engine will ignite and combust to send energy back down the piston, which in turn moves your car.
How do I know if something is wrong with the spark plugs?
To avoid any spark plug misfortunes that can leave you stranded, you must stay up to date with your spark plug replacement. Slow ignition start up can be a tell-tale sign that you may be experiencing a weak connection from your spark plugs.
When should I replace the spark plugs?
Typically, it is recommended to change spark plugs every 30,000-40,000 miles. But if there are signs of carbon buildup, an ASE-certified technician may recommend replacing them sooner. Ignoring this service may leave you stranded because no spark, or even a weak one, won’t be enough to get your engine turning.
